Determining If a Number Is Prime

A prime number is a numeral that is greater than 1 and cannot be divided evenly by any other number except 1 and itself. If a number can be divided evenly by any other number not counting itself and 1, it is not prime and is referred to as a composite number. Factors vs. Multiples When working with prime numbers, students should know the difference between factors and multiples. These two terms are easily confused, but factors are numbers that can be divided evenly into the given number, while multiples are the results of multiplying that number by another. Additionally, prime numbers are whole numbers that must be greater than one, and as a result, zero and 1 are not considered prime numbers, nor is any number less than zero. The number 2 is the first prime number, as it can only be divided by itself and the number 1. Using Factorization Using a process called factorization, mathematicians can quickly determine whether a number is prime. To use factorization, you need to know that a factor is any number that can be multiplied by another number to get the same result. For instance, the prime factors of the number 10 are 2 and 5 because these whole numbers can be multiplied by one another to equal 10. However, 1 and 10 are also considered factors of 10 because they can be multiplied by one another to equal 10. In this case, the prime factors of 10 are 5 and 2, since both 1 and 10 are not prime numbers. An easy way for students to use factorization to determine if a number is prime is by giving them concrete counting items like beans, buttons, or coins. They can use these to divide objects into ever-smaller groups. For example, they could divide 10 marbles into two groups of five or five groups of two. Using a Calculator After using the concrete method as described in the previous section, students can use calculators and the concept of divisibility to determine whether a number is prime. Have students take a calculator and key in the number to determine whether it is prime. The number should divide into a whole number. For example, take the number 57. Have students divide the number by 2. They will see that the quotient is 27.5, which is not an even number. Now have them divide 57 by 3. They will see that this quotient is a whole number: 19. So, 19 and 3 are factors of 57, which is, then, not a prime number. Other Methods Another way to find if a number is prime is by using a factorization tree, where students determine the common factors  of multiple numbers. For instance, if a student is factoring the number 30, she could begin with 10 x 3 or 15 x 2. In each case, she continues to factor—10 (2 x 5) and 15 (3 x 5). The end result will yield the same prime factors: 2, 3, and 5 because 5 x 3 x 2 30, as does 2 x 3 x 5. Simple division with pencil and paper can also be a good method for teaching young learners how to determine prime numbers. First, divide the number by 2, then by 3, 4, and 5 if none of those factors yields a whole number. This method is useful to help someone just starting out to understand what makes a number prime.

Gattaca enters the same category as Contact (1997). Starring Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law Gattaca is a Science Fiction film about a possible future dystopian world. The movie draws on what it means to be human and the concerns over reproductive technologies which facilitate eugenics, and takes the possible consequences of such technological development to the extreme. It also delves into the idea of destiny and the ways it can and does govern lives. This film has been constructed very cleverly with many things having hidden meanings, a perfect example is the title Gattaca in the opening credits the letters GATC are highlighted, these leters are used to lable DNA strands. Sutle hints continue throughout the picture. The Gattaccan world is a scary example of a world valuing genectic engineering and eugentics it presents a new kind of discrimination â€Å"we’ve now got discrimination down to a science†. Actually, he was a big college swimming star. † Jude Law is Jerome Eugene Morrow a man with genetics ‘second to none’ however after competing as a swimmer and winning only a silver medal Jerome attempts suicide but yet again falls short and instead paralizes himself from the waist down. And when, for one reason or another, a member of the elite falls on hard times, their genetic identity becomes a valued commodity for the unscrupulous. One mans loss is another mans gain. † As Jerome’s ‘accident’ occurred in â€Å"Australasia somewhere† it is not on file Vincent buys Jerome’s identity under the conditions of paying 25% of all earnings to German and financially supporting the real Jerome Morrow. Vincent is proving to be a successful Jerome impersonator and develops a relationship with Irene Cassini played by Uma Thurman a Gattaca Aerospace Corporation collgue. Irene has anâ€Å"’Unacceptable risk of heart failure. ’ I think thats what the manual says. The only trip Ill take in space is around the sun on this satellite right here. † Each of these characters is battling the burden of perfection in some way. By the end of this film you are left wondering why humanity as it is, is moving toward a genetic future. Gattaca is carefully constructed using a lot of symbolism that is obvious to some viewers and others will pick up on in time. The characters names all have a hidden meaning, Eugene symbolises the concept eugenics, Vincent’s valid brother named Anton means pure, ideal or perfect, Irene’s name means peace a fitting name for a honest, accepting character who often keeps the peace between characters and makes Vincent feel at peace with his true identity and finally Vincent Freeman symbolises his journey to become a free man once he has overcome all obstacles and made it to space. Viewers are positioned to accept the reading that we must either accept a genetic future or humanity as it already is. The world of Gattaca values Genetic Engineering Eugenics, Genoism, Social Order and Perfection. These values are underpinned by Gattacan people only socialising with people in the same genetic class as them and are honoured by the friendship of those in higher classes. The quality of your genes determines your position in the world, â€Å"blood has no nationality†. This idea of perfection is clearly evident throughout and heavily impacts viewers raising questions about the burden of perfection. Gattaca was directed by Andrew Niccoll it was made to firstly make money as well as to shock audiences with a controversial comment on human condition. This film uses film techniques to its advantage they are used to make the viewer aware of the foreground, middle ground and background as well as creating tension, making the viewer feel as though they are in the action, adding variety and most commonly used in Gattaca to create drama and suspicion. This done by using extreme close ups, these create suspicion, drama and inform the viewer of what is happening this technique is exploited in Gattaca. The main character Vincent narrates the film; this positions you to view what is happening from his point of view, from an in-valid point of view. It instils the belief that Gattaca is a dystopian future. The characters are developed cleverly so that we as viewers can relate easily to many aspects of their personality. For example Vincent is the determined underdog, a position many of us have taken on at same point in our lives. This film is absurdly structured but the idea can be explained by the two quotes at the beginning of the film As night-fall does not come at once, neither does oppression It is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air- however slight lest we become victims of the darkness. This acts as a warning about the second one I not only think that we will tamper with Mother Nature, I think Mother wants us to. This theme is continued throughout the picture, this text was constructed for a clear purpose, in was constructed to comment on what it means to be human and the concerns over reproductive technologies which further eugenics however Niccoll has taken necessary steps to imbed it into the film as if it was to obvious it would not attract enough veiwers, he has secretly encoded his message into Gattaca to attract more veiwers and in the long run make money. Sexual Harrasment The issue that I have chosen to research for the policy and procedures team is sexual harassment in the workplace. The present policy contained in the associate handbook states the following: Sexual harassment can take many forms. It includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other visual, verbal, or physical conduct of a sexual nature when a persons employment with Sears depends on submission to the conduct; submission to or rejection of the conduct affects employment decisions concerning the person; or such conduct unreasonably interface with a persons work performance or create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Any violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Also, we have a brochure about this issue in the break room. Yearly, there is a focus meeting with every associate to remind them how the company prohibits all forms of sexual harassment. The following paragraphs will discuss the r esearch I found that was missing in our company and information on how to inform our associates about sexual harassment. Sexual harassment, like rape, is not primarily a sexual event. It is an exercise in POWER over another person. The offender achieves a form of dominance by making sexual advances or comments to someone who is not in a positions to respond effectively. The result is often a host of psychological and even physical problem for the target. The federal judges arrived at their decision in two ways. The first way that if an employer made an employees life so miserable that the employee could not take it any longer and quit. The second way states Title VII says employers cannot discriminate with respect to the conditions of employment. The companys definition of sexual harassment is similar to the one that I found in my research on this issue. The area that our company may want to look into is how an associate can prevent sexual harassment. Some of the key points are: how you dress, dont do social service tasks, and avoid courtship behavior. The area of dressing to go to work may cause sexual harassment if the associate does not watch what they are wearing, associates should dress appropriately for the office. The next area is concerned with social service tasks such as getting the person lunch or any non work related activity. This will cause you owe me on and may lead to other things. The last area pertains to avoiding courtship behavior, which is non verbal communication. People may take this the wrong way and the results can lead to comments or actions that would interrupt the work place. These points can be related back to the associate during the focus meeting. The last area the policy and procedures team can look at is how the management can improve the way they handle sexual harassment in the work place. Luckily, this company hasnt had to make many reports. Some points to cover are: to keep work quality high, get respect for the associate and keep a diary of sexual harassment reports. Keeping the work quality relates to having the associate do their work and not having the time to do other things which can keep someone from reporting a sexual harassment case. This can lead the associate to a more comfortable feeling and continue their communications with management about things that are happening in the work place. The diary idea is a good one because it is the first step in establishing the sexual harassment case. The research that I found on sexual harassment will help with any revisions the company may make on policies of this subject. My suggestion is to give more information during the focus meetings such as how to prevent sexual harassment in the work place. Also, to train the management team how to handle a sexual harassment case when it occurs. Business Essays
